October may be a candy lover’s favorite month thanks to all the Halloween offerings, but here’s a new reason to celebrate October – some candies you love may be participating in raising awareness for breast cancer research, prevention and treatment. Here are a few I’ve seen in stores:
- Limited-edition dark- and light-pink M&M’S® Milk Chocolate and M&M’S® Peanut Milk Chocolate Candies will be sold nationwide in stores in September and October. Dove® Chocolate will offer Promises of HopeTM are wrapped in pink foils that feature inspirational messages written by breast cancer survivors to provide hope to others battling against the disease. Mars Snackfood US will donate a minimum of one million dollars to aid Susan G. Komen for the Cure in their quest to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
- The Hershey Company will also turn pink in October to help raise awareness of breast cancer. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the iconic Hershey’s® Kisses® Brand Milk Chocolates, Hershey’s® Nuggets Chocolates, Hershey’s® Syrup, York® Peppermint Patties and Reese’s® Peanut Butter Cup Miniatures will feature pink packaging to showcase the company’s commitment to educating women, supporting research and finding a cure for breast cancer. Hershey will donate $300,000 to the Young Survivors Coalition this year and is hosting a four-day charity bike ride for the group.
- New Era Brands is also offering limited edition pink containers of its Aura™ Clip’n'Go™ mi
nts and gum this fall timed to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A portion of the proceeds from these sales will go to the foundation. New Era will also be distributing samples at fundraising walks throughout the country this year. - Through the end of October 5 cents from every pack of Pink Ribbon Tic Tacs® will be donated to CancerCare – about $100,000 in total.
Have you seen other Pink Ribbon candies in your local stores?

For those looking for an upscale awareness-booster this month, try Bella’s Confections — a company that produces fudge and a new-this-year product, Bella’s Bites.
From their website: “To show our support for Breast Cancer Awareness, Bella’s Confections created pink themed products that coordinate with Pink October. 50% of each purchase will be donated to The Fremont Rideout Foundation Cancer Center located in the hometown of Bella’s Confections.”

Moderator’s admission and further information on Katie’s comment:
I initially held her comment for a while because I get notices about such things all the time and they rarely turn out to be true. THIS ONE IS. I confirmed this with Susan G. Komen For The Cure and tried to get more information. Here is what I was just emailed:
“Here is how it works. Cell phone users will have the chance to instantly react to fundraising appeals and confirm their donation by simply sending a text message. The donation is charged to the donor’s regular monthly cell phone bill and is separated from other transactions, identified as a non-taxable donation*.
*A one-time charge of $5 will be added to your mobile phone bill. Standard messaging rates and additional fees may apply. All charges are billed by and payable to your mobile service provider. Proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Service is available on most carriers. You can unsubscribe at any time by texting ‘STOP’ to 90999.”
I asked how much they get out of your $5 donation but did not get a response. At least we know they get something!
Thanks, Katie, for passing this on!
