Candy Dish Blog

The Official Candy Blog of the National Confectioners Association

Regular readers of the blog will note that I jumped the gun on this post last week by announcing the contest too soon.  This time, I mean it.  You can really win a prize now!

********************************

As Carl mentioned last week, NCA moved to new office space in Washington, DC a few weeks ago.  To celebrate our arrival, we’re hosting an Open House for some industry contacts this afternoon.  We may be celebrating as you read this post in fact.

We’re very excited about the fun, new decor we have in place.  Take a look:

Anytime you visit the NCA office, you leave with candy.  It’s a rule. Tonight’s party is no exception.  Everyone is getting this fabulous take away gift that Kristin, our intern extraordinaire, assembled.

Gift Bags

Kristin did a beautiful job with the gift bags!

And Kristin is sharing the love (she’s so considerate like that).  She made three extra bags for readers of the Candy Dish blog. Gosh, you all are one lucky bunch!  She even picked a pretty simple contest to help us choose the winner.

This is the desk where Kristin sits:

Don’t you love those cylinders full of candy?  Take a close look at this one:

Cylinder of Chocolate

To win the prize, guess how many chocolates are in the cylinder.  That’s it.  Guess a number, without going over - the three closest guesses will win.   The cylinder is 18 inches high with a diameter of 6 inches (looks a lot smaller in the picture, doesn’t it?).

Enter your guess in the comments section by Monday, May 3.  Good luck!

I think that if I had the desk, it would soon be unfilled of it’s candy.

I think that,(If she didn’t eat any,) there are, 143. (If I were a math nut, I would figure out the size of one of those candies and the amount of space in the jar and come up with a logical answer instead of a random one.) Kudos on the Mac BTW!

taking into account the volume of the cylinder, size of the candy and the fact that Carl probably jammed a couple jumbo Toblerones in the middle….i’m going with 420

My friend Nighthawk has a good concern. There is nothing in the cylinder to take up extra space and thus trick you, except all those little candies.

For those of you like Laura, who seek a geometric solution to this problem, let’s have a little refresher on volume. The volume of a cylinder is calculated by multiplying the area of the circle by the height of the cylinder:

r=3 (half of the diameter, which is 6)
    so the area of the circle = pi * r^2 = pi * 9 = 28.26 square inches
    Volume of the cylinder = 28.26 * 18 = 508.68 cubic inches

That’s the first step of the problem. You math folks may want to go buy a bag of the candies and measure them, sharpen those pencils and get to work.

    Enjoy!

Oh dear I’m scared of that kind of math! I’m in 7th grade and still scared of math!

  17. I used the ‘Stacy Math’ method and my guess is 578.

    Laura,

The beauty of math is that it allows us to see and measure the world around us. Geometry and algebra are important sciences to master if you want to become adept in many of the fine arts like painting, dance or even music. They are the basis for architecture, astronomy, physics and many other disciplines.

I used to teach math and can tell you something very true about it. People who have a good mastery of mathematics statistically make more money. No kidding. The reason lots of people have math anxiety is that math is taught as a series of rules instead of a series of truths. The practical and philosophical application of math are rarely covered in school, but believe me when I tell you that they are there.

Fear not. You have another five grades and then hopefully many years of college to really get math and examine it closely. I think the biggest thing you can learn from math class, in addition to practical calculation for everyday life, is how to approach things logically and make solid arguments.

Wait – why are you commenting here when you should be in class?

Because I’m home schooled and I have very little school to do every day.

Er, that sounds bad, I mean: I have finished most of my requirements for the year, so now we are taking it slower. My mom pushed us hard during the year, so we are slowing down.

I never come anywhere close to winning these things. It’s that “without going over” rule that does it – I worry so much about going over that I guess way too low. Well not this time! This time I’m going to be brave, and… aaaaaah…

    107

Okay, maybe not as brave as some of you. But that’s my guess, and I’m stuck with it.
