Many thanks to loyal reader Kristin, whom you can see in the picture at right, hiding behind the candy fortress and my coffee cup, for sending me an article about the world’s top ten best selling candies. It’s really a very interesting analysis about the global confectionery market and finishes with the list. When Kristin isn’t busy finding content for this blog, which is really my responsibility, I recruit her to help feed and hose down the oompa loompas and oil Jonny’s roller skates from time to time. She has her own duties too, like basically keeping the office running. We couldn’t do anything without her here.
The top ten is interesting in itself, but go read the article for more information.
- M&Ms – Mars – USA
- Cadbury’s Dairy Milk – Cadbury – UK
- Milka – Kraft – Germany
- Trident – Cadbury – Brazil
- Meiji – Meiji Seika Kaisha – Japan
- Orbit – Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. – Russia
- Trident – Cadbury – Mexico
- Hollywood – Cadbury – France
- Vivident – Perfetti Van Melle – Italy
- Hsu Fu Chi – Hsu Fu Chi International – China
Thanks, Kristin, for this article. The whole office appreciates your hard work. You are a true gem in our office of gem-colored candies.
Does this surprise you? What would you have guessed was the world’s top selling candy?

Hmmmm..I think this might be skewed. I mean I have no idea how many different types of Trident are out there, but let’s say there are 15 flavors. There’s only one Cadbury’s Dairy Milk. How do you compare the two? Seems unfair. Plus, is gum really a candy? Where do Altoids fit? I think it’s depressing that Trident is considered a more popular candy than say – Reese’s. Or even the Circus Peanut!

Gum is part of the confectionery industry. The category is broken down into three sub-categories: chocolate, non-chocolate and gum. It sounds a little silly to break it up like this but these are official designations from USDA or some agency – I can’t remember now which one for sure.
I know what you mean about Reese’s products. On the other hand, nobody eats peanut butter outside of North America, so that could be one reason it’s like this.
The one thing that surprised me is the lack of durian candy on the list. Mmm – sweet, rich, stinky durian!

It doesn’t look like the top 10 list by product, but by country. I’d like to see the list be more global… top 10 products regardless of country, and include multiple countries where the same products are sold. e.g. M&M sales from the US, Canada, Mexico, etc.
