Bronzed and well-rested, I have just returned from my annual July 4th vacation in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. For years I have rented a house with about a dozen other people to relax, swim, read books, pick crabs and just hang out. And eat salt water taffy. One of my favorite places to get taffy in the Outer Banks is from Forbes Candies. They have the most delicious mouth-watering grape taffy I have ever tasted. I’m pretty sure Willy Wonka would have wanted this taffy in his factory – it’s THAT good.
Although the taffy is not actually made with saltwater, it is gluten-free and they guarantee that every piece is “Chock Full of Sea Breeze and Sunshine!” Forbes has lots of flavors ranging from cherry to key lime and even eggnog. Not sure how I feel about eggnog taffy, but it might be a good Christmas gift idea that would remind people of the warm summer months to come. Unless you live in Florida, or Texas, or anywhere else in the deep south, in which case you don’t ever have cold weather. Lucky ducks.
You can read about the history of salt water taffy or you can tell me where you have found YOUR favorite kind of salt water taffy!

I love salt water taffy, too. We have a recipe on the Web site for it – http://www.candyusa.com/Healthy/RecipesDetail.cfm?ItemNumber=962
But, I think it’s much better to have someone else make it for you. In Ocean City, where I grew up and where my parents still live, we enjoy Dolle’s salt water taffy.

Salt water taffy is da bomb. My friend Hilary recently brought me a bag of it. Great stuff!

[...] She loved our office and was almost overwhelmed by the candy room. And she brought me taffy. I know Tori just talked about taffy from her visit to the Outer Banks but the stuff Hilary brought me was from Maine, so really [...]

I got some pretty good taffy at the dollar store and thought it tasted pretty good.
When I read the ingredients, I saw it was made with partially hyrdo oil, which has been called the bad oil blamed for clogging blood flows.

Hi, Smith. Although I am not a doctor, I feel confident in saying that moderation is the key. You don’t want too much of anything, especially certain types of fats and oils, but a treat now and then isn’t so bad.
But you bring up a good point here, that we should know what we are putting in our bodies and should make sensible, reasoned decisions about what we eat. I can only assume you read the ingredients AFTER eating the taffy! Thanks for mentioning this.
