Trail MixI was just thinking while driving to work this morning that this is one of the last days of decent commuting because later this week or possibly next, the roads will be full with students and school buses. That means it’s one of our last chances to get out and enjoy a nice walk in the woods with the kids in our lives and enjoy the last few moments of calm before homework, tests, papers and projects.

Trail mix definitely has to be on the menu for that trek. I have a secret ingredient for my trail mix recipe. In addition to things like granola, shredded coconut (Susan’s favorite) and sunflower seeds, I like to throw in some form of chocolate for extra sweetness. For this time of year, I use M&Ms because they are less likely to melt, but as it gets colder in autumn, sometimes I add chocolate chips to the mix. Reese’s Pieces are also a nice addition. The peanut butter taste goes really well with everything else! I have heard of people adding Smarties – both Canadian and real – as well. If I am feeling really nutty I will add peanut M&Ms. Nutty. Get it? Nutty?

You are a tough audience.

But really, the nice thing about trail mix is that it isn’t just for the trail. It’s a nice mid-afternoon snack or maybe something to carry you just another hour until lunch. It’s actually 11:00 as I type this and I could go for some of this concoction about now. It is also a great snack for the kids’ lunchboxes, whether as part of their lunch or for snack time.

What special sweets and secret ingredients do you like to add to trail mix?

  1. MMM. The trail mix in that picture looks really good. I have used chocolate covered sunflower seeds in my trail mix before. Knocks out two birds with one stone. Check out – http://www.kimmiecandy.com/sunbursts.html Making trail mix the way Carl describes is actually great for packing in lunch boxes, too – for those whose kids have already hit the books for the year. Make a big batch on Sunday and divide it up into zipper tops snack bags to toss in with the sandwich and apple (or whatever kids eat in school these days).
