Candy Dish Blog

The Official Candy Blog of the National Confectioners Association

In keeping with the theme of this week, here we have a photo of candy corn. Yep. One of my newest favorite photographers in Frances Civello, a fellow photographer based in Hershey, PA. As you might guess, she take lots of photos of candy and chocolate, since she lives in the town where sweetness was invented. We have featured her work before and everyone here loves her sense of composition.

Speaking of composition, Frances does a great job in this photo centering the subject. Note that this photo does not follow the rule of thirds, to which I have made previous reference. However, the perfect centering makes it an appealing and interesting photo to behold. The lines are all regular and offer a defined structure, wherein the individual kernels of candy corn, plucked fresh from the candy cob, arranged in a natural, yet somewhat chaotic manner, reside.

Candy DishBlogger Dorie Morgan has an interesting analysis on her site of her friend’s office candy dish and its reflection of the current economy and impact on employee morale. Her friend’s office recently stopped stocking the candy dish, claiming it was too much of an expense with the economy as it is. Dorie goes on to explain that because of this action, the employees in the office feel demoralized. After all, if something that costs about $10 per week is too much of an expense, what or who is next on the chopping block?

I’m with Dorie on this. Candy is a simple pleasure that everyone can enjoy without much expense. It makes us feel good and gives us an opportunity to be happy and enjoy something in spite of current economic conditions. Have you heard that the Dow closed yesterday under 7000 points? Keep the candy dish out. We all know things are not good right now but we could all use a pick-me-up as well.

What’s the status of your office candy dish?

Candy Dish by unprose.

I love Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother and Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog).  He’s hilarious.  Seriously.  If you have not seen Dr. Horrible, get yourself over to Netflix and add it to your cue immediately.

So I was pretty psyched to learn recently that, like me, NPH loves peanut butter and chocolate.  A co-worker put a ripped out page from a magazine highlighting the favorite candies of five “Hollywood Hunks” on my chair.  There’s no indication what the magazine actually is (so I apologize in advance for not giving credit where credit is due) and I don’t even know what co-worker to ask.

NPH loves Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.  He told the magazine, “The more you eat them, the more you have to eat them – until you burst.”

Wayne Brady (Don’t Forget the Lyrics) goes for Peanut M&Msbecause he likes to bite off the candy shell and eat the nut on its own.  “If you see a dish with all the nuts missing, you know I was there.  I’m a nut bandit.”  I take that to mean he puts the candy shell back in the dish.  Euw.

Jerry Seinfeld (Bee Movie) says he likes Bit-O-Honey  and claims that it has nothing to do with his movie either.  There’s a picture of him with the treats at Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York.

James Denton (Desperate Housewives) loves the “little mini Snickers.”

Rainn Wilson (The Office) digs candy corn because “you can bite out the colors one at a time.”  I wonder what end he starts with?

I was thinking about celebs and snacking over the the weekend because it seemed like every time the Academy Awards Show cut to commercial break I heard about True North nuts (which I’m guessing Wayne Brady would be a big fan of).

So, two questions, dear readers:

1. Have you heard of other celebrities with a particularly favorite brand of candy or snacks?

and 2. Do you think the list above can rightfully call itself a list of ”Hollywood Hunks”?  I’m not so sure … but do I wonder what candy Hugh Jackman calls his favorite …

Candy DishCheck out the new candy dish that appeared in our conference room today. It has five candy holders and is mounted on a swivel base. The container pointing somewhat toward you, just to the left, is filled with Goetze’s Caramel Creams. Those are my kryptonite. I am powerless when I am near them.

We needed this candy dish because we didn’t have enough already, apparently. Sheesh!

Candy dishMy lovely wife and I went home last week to the town where I grew up and reconnected with some old friends. Joey and Kris, two of the nicest people I have ever known, had us over for dinner and during the tour of their house I spied this candy dish that was surprisingly full. It surprised me because I do not use candy as decoration, except in photographs I do. If candy is around my home, it gets eaten with wild abandon. In fact, for the candy photos I do, I have to hide the sweet stuff from my wife, and then I forget about it as well and then we find it and eat it, hopefully after it is photographed.

However, there are lots of candies that are good for decorating in this way. Here you can see Reese’s cups, M&M’s, and then on the bottom are some mini fun-size bars and kisses. Everything is brightly colored, so it’s a really nice way to brighten up a corner of the room, and in a very tasty way!

Joey and Kris – Thanks for a great time, and I hope you will let us know the key to your candy discipline. I am still working on that one.

CandyI got an email from Susan in Richmond, who asks:

Hello all!! We have a small office and have noticed that our “nook” is being used as a great little hideaway when employees need a break. I’d love to keep a cool (unbreakable) dish of candy there along with some lovely pre-wrapped candies. So, when I found your cool blog, I thought…Hmmm…maybe they can suggest something fabulous for our members because you live in the candy world. It’s much more tasty than the financial world!! Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have!!

So Susan has two questions – First, what kind of candy dish do you have? Second, what’s in it? I suggested mints – either the peppermints like the ones at right or else the swirly, sweet kind that appear to be genetically linked to candy canes. What do you suggest?

Also, do you agree that candy is tastier than finance? Candy or finance. That’s a tough one!

Falls Church Candy DishSo yesterday I mentioned the FREE Peanut M&Ms at the DMV Select office in nearby Falls Church, VA. By the way, if you need to get anything simple done at the DMV, that’s definitely the way to go. No standing in lines, queuing up at 7 a.m. or other nonsense like that. It’s fast and efficient. And there’s candy.

Cathy Kaye, the city’s treasurer, asked if she could help me when she spied me photographing her dish of candy corn. I suppose it’s not every day that some freak wanders in and starts taking pictures. But let’s be honest – candy corn really is the king of Halloween candies, right? It deserves to be photographed before all other seasonal candies, in my book.

Falls Church Candy DishI explained that I work for the candy industry and told her about this site. She was good enough to explain that I was not only taking a picture of candy corn, but that it was a special dish as well. It is a 1920’s criss-cross box, so named for the criss-cross pattern in the glass. It certainly does have a good art deco look to it, with straight lines intersecting at right angles and accentuating the length of the box. It has the look of a piece of art uniquely representing a time in history, like the Chrysler Building, except without the gargoyles. I imagine this is the candy dish Tom and Daisy had in The Great Gatsby.

Thanks, Cathy, for sharing your dish and the candy corn in it with me and with the rest of the community.
