Peeps in Places

Just when you thought all the Peeps contests had passed you by, here is another opportunity to play with the little marshmallow guys. National Geographic Traveler has a Peeps contest. The idea is to take photos of Peeps in interesting travel destinations. Too bad I didn’t bring Peeps with me to Wat Phra Kaeow in Bangkok, the San Felipe Church in old town Albuquerque or my favorite crepe restaurant in Toronto, where Ronen plays accordion and the owner, Veronique, always gives me a hug. I will have to plan better next time I hit the road. Of course, we have some Peeps-worthy stuff right here in DC as well.

Where will you take some Peeps to photograph them?

Peeps in Hudson RiverIt’s time again for the annual Peeps diorama contest sponsored by The Washington Post. This annual celebration of Peeps is very timely this year, as it is sure to bring an extra boost to the Peeps Store at the National Harbor in DC.

Last year some of you submitted your ideas and pictures. This year I hope you will post them on the Candy Dish Blog Flickr group as well so we can see the cool stuff you are putting together. Act quickly because the deadline for entry on the Post’s site is March 1st. Basically you have until the end of the weekend to get your submissions in.

Check out the creativity here. Above is a diorama showing the crash of the plane last year into the Hudson River, in which, due to the skill and quick thinking of pilot Chesley B. Sullenberger, nobody was killed. Look – there’s Sully on the wing, complete with white mustache!

Peeptown CupcakeHere is another great one, showing a familiar scene at Georgetown Cupcake here in Georgetown, which has a constant line out the door, it seems. If you remember, that’s where Susan bought the cupcakes for her wedding last year. People do some great stuff with these Peeps contests.

What design would you like to do? Even though the official contest is only open to DC-area residents, you should all go have some fun with the little marshmallow guys. Post your picture to the Flickr pool. We’d love to see what you come up with!

Who couldn’t use a few Benjamins in their wallet? Mars has a new contest in which you can win any of four prizes, including $225,000 toward your mortgage. Talk about an economic stimulus plan for the common person! They call it their Snackonomics contest. I call it a whole heap of money. They have four possible prizes:

  • Your mortgage paid off up to $225,000
  • A year’s salary up to $50,000
  • A year’s worth of car payments up to $5,000
  • A coupon for a free SNICKERS® bar

I say even that last prize – the free Snickers bar – is worth it. To me it’s the perfect snack and has all four food groups: nougat, chocolate, nuts and chewy.

To enter, see the contest Web site and buy specially marked Snickers bars. And if you have anything left over after paying off your house or car, let me know. Big Daddy can use a dinner out now and then, or at least an extra Snickers bar. And yes, that is the title on my business card, much to Susan’s dismay.

So are you going? My wife knows how I feel about Ashlee Simpson, so I am forbidden, but maybe you can go and take some photos of the scene for us. I bet it will be a lot of fun!

Stride GumI love the animation on the Stride Gum contest’s site. The freight elevator, blinged-out ram, money… A genius invented this thing. From the Stride Web site:

Do people say your ideas are ridiculous? Perfect, that’s just what we’re looking to finance here at The Vault! Tell us all about the most ridiculous thing you’ve always wanted to do and why and you could be a monthly winner of $5,000!

Stride GumWhat ridiculous ideas do you have? I am pretty sure I am not eligible, since here at NCA we are business partners with them, but if I could enter, I think I would write about my desire to move to Thailand and become a Buddhist monk. Or I might write about the chocolate zucchini bread Susan made. Because, really, chocolate and zucchini in the same food item is crazy talk and it ended up being crazy delicious.

Something else of note on the Stride Web site is Dancing Matt, who became Internet famous about five years ago and inspired my friend Amanda Congdon to make a similar video when she worked for Rocketboom.

Black Forest GummiesFerrara Pan Black Forest Gummies has a contest that can win you a $100,000 grand prize. No joking. Even if you are not the lucky winner of that princely sum, you will still be entered to win a whole bunch of other things like a trip for four to Yellowstone Park or a selection of one of more than 3300 various items to enjoy in the great outdoors.

What would you do with the $100,000 grand prize? Me, I’d buy Susan and Tori lunch. They put up with me enough that they have pretty much earned it by now.

Editor’s note: Our theme this week is candy contests, so check back all week to learn more ways you can win candy from the folks who make it, or in this case, money from the folks who make your favorite candy!

Congratulations to Dawn Casey of Alexandria, VA, who is our big winner for the giant box of candy Susan put together. To win, Dawn had to relate a holiday tradition she and her family practice. Here was her entry:

As a child, I remember quite often staring at the Christmas Tree, wondering what I was going to get for Christmas. My mother did something I thought was horribly sneaky at the time, but now I do it to my own kids: I don’t put out the presents until everyone is sleeping on Christmas Eve! So, for the entire month of December, my kids get to stare at our tree, without the slightest clue as to what Christmas morning will bring. I personally agree with my mother, in that it’s a lot more exciting to come out in the morning and find a huge pile of presents you weren’t expecting!

Way to go, Dawn. I hope you and your kids enjoy the winnings!
