Sadly, football is wrapping up.  College football has been over for about a month now, and the Superbowl is this Sunday.  Where has the season gone?

Since we’re in the middle of a blizzard here in DC, I don’t think I’ll be doing anything too exciting for Superbowl Sunday since I can’t even see my car.  Instead, I’m thinking of baking a cake for me and the fiancé!  Hey, I gotta show him my Betty Crocker side every once in awhile to assure him I’m wifey material.   We managed to attend 6 Virginia Tech games this year, but I stumbled across this stadium cake pan a little too late in the season to be able to bring it to tailgates.  If your mailman won’t overnight the pan to your house in this snowstorm, you could always make an easy football pull-apart cake made of delicious chocolate cupcakes!

Since I’m not a Saints or Colts fan, I’m thinking of decorating my stadium for both teams.  Any thoughts as to what candies I could put on top?

I am excited about the East-West Shrine Game this Saturday. This game is a long tradition in football and I know Tori, our reigning queen of the sport, is excited to watch it as well. Actually, she broke a toe yesterday and will be resting her foot, so likely football will be on the tube and hopefully her fiance will be bringing her some good candy snacks like these. She deserves it.

For my football viewing pleasure, I plan to have some of the chocolates I photographed, as well as Barbara’s favorite concoction of M&Ms and salted cocktail peanuts. Yum – that sweet/salt combination is easy to get and really something to try! What are you going to have?

As you know, if you have been reading for a while, the Shriners are a group close to my heart. We have given candy to the kids at the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia and I am active in their various events. You can watch the game Saturday on ESPN2 at 3 p.m.

What is your favorite game-time snack?

Football FansAre you a football nut like Tori is? Hershey’s has a new video contest that can get you a $1000 Visa gift card and some Hershey’s branded college football gear.

The contest, called, “I’m a Big Fan,” runs through Nov. 3. Contestants can post videos and each week five video finalists will be chosen to be put up for public vote. The eight weekly winners will get the gift card and some cool football gear.

Tori is a fan of Virginia Tech or VCU or Old Dominion or one of those second-rate college teams. Me, I stick with NCSU, which is my alma mater. Susan – well, Susan probably doesn’t even know which part of the football is the top, since she is equally misguided about candy corn. Whichever team is your favorite, be passionate and submit a video now!

So who is your favorite NCAA team and what would you do with the $1000?

M&MsAs our resident sports expert Tori pointed out, football season has begun, which means that pretty soon you will be having friends over for Sunday afternoon parties – chips, dip, cocktail weenies and barbecue sauce (another of Mother Weaver’s specialties) and some great desserts. Need a new snack to add to the table?

Barbara here in our DC Candy Hideaway has an excellent idea. Take a bag of M&Ms and mix it about half-and-half with salted cocktail peanuts. Mix and serve. If you have not tried this, it’s wonderful, simple, fast and does not require cleanup, except for the empty M&Ms bags.

Try making candy cakes like Susan S does or maybe even a football cake, or at least a football-shaped cake. We wouldn’t any footballs harmed in this exercise.

What sweet snacks are you preparing for the big game?

Labor Day weekend… quite possibly the best weekend of the year. It’s warm, people are grilling out and laughing about all the summer fun they had and most importantly, football season begins!  I can’t even try to hide my excitement for Hokie football to start.  I’ve already cast my vote for my new gameday t-shirt, I’ve packed my bags for this weekend’s kickoff game in Atlanta, and I’ve already set up doggy boarding for Bella for the entire season.  Hey, I used to be a Girl Scout – I’m prepared!

Anyway, not only has Anheuser-Busch made the all-controversial team colored cans this season, but so have candy and chocolate companies!  MARS offers My Team M&M’s Blends for pro teams, Pez makes college football helmet dispensers, Candy Warehouse lends up football hard candy lollipops, and Dylan’s Candy Bar has molded a football out of solid milk chocolate.   How could football and confectionery NOT go together!?

MMs_RedskinsAfter everyone has polished off the meatballs, wings and seven layer dip, you can just hand out some of these treats to your fellow tailgaters. Even if your team loses and you’re feeling down in the dumps, your friends will still love you for bringing them these sweet mood boosters!
Or, you can just grab yourself another cocktail.
